Sunday brought a mix of quiet moments, shared memories, and deep emotions. It was a day that reminded me how grief and family connections often intertwine, shaping our experiences in unexpected ways. From early morning coffee with my mom to attending a memorial service that stirred old wounds, the day unfolded with both comfort and challenge.

Morning Calm and Family Time

The day began peacefully. My mom and I woke up early, enjoying coffee together as the house slowly came to life. This simple ritual gave us a chance to relax and prepare for the day ahead. Before heading to church, we visited my grandmother. Spending time with her felt grounding, a gentle reminder of the importance of family roots.

At church, I had the opportunity to Facebook live-stream the service. Sharing this experience with others brought me joy and a sense of purpose. The familiar hymns and prayers offered comfort, and being part of the community lifted my spirits.

Facing Grief at the Memorial Service

After church, I took my mom home and then went to a memorial service for Denny Theel. This was the first memorial I attended since my Mercedes passed away, which made it especially difficult. The service was held in the high school gym, where many Quinault community members gathered. Seeing so many familiar faces was both heartwarming and bittersweet.

The moment that hit me hardest was during the slideshow, when the song "Jealous of the Angels" by Donna Taggart played. This was the same song played at Mercedes’ service. Hearing it again brought a wave of grief that I hadn’t expected. I left the service early, unable to stay for the food afterward. Instead, I went home to share a quiet meal with my mom.

Finding Strength in Small Moments

That evening, I had two slices of my 30-calorie bread with peanut butter and some Mississippi roast with my mom. I also had a Red Bull Zero energy drink to keep me going. These small acts of self-care helped me stay grounded through the emotional day.

At the memorial, I sat beside my sister Rosemary and my niece Emma, which helped me feel a sense of closeness during a tough time. My sister Juanita chose to sit with her friends, showing how everyone processes grief differently. Later, I visited my grandmother again at 4 pm, continuing the thread of family support throughout the day.

Managing Health Amid Emotional Strain

Amid the emotional ups and downs, I stayed mindful of my health. I took my Trizepatide shot, now at 4mg, with plans to increase to 5mg next week. Managing physical health during emotional times is crucial, and this routine gave me a sense of control and progress.

Embracing the Complexity of Grief and Family

This Sunday was a vivid reminder that grief is not a straight path. It comes in waves, triggered by memories, songs, or gatherings. Family plays a vital role in navigating these moments, offering both comfort and space to feel.

If you find yourself facing similar emotions, remember that it’s okay to step back when needed and lean on loved ones. Small moments of connection, like sharing a meal or sitting quietly together, can provide strength. Grief may be painful, but it also deepens our bonds and reminds us of the love that remains.
