Starting a day with a clear focus on health can be challenging, especially when managing complex conditions like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) alongside everyday activities. Today’s food journal and health reflections offer a glimpse into balancing nutrition, medical care, and personal life. This post shares a day of meals, a bit about HCM, and how small steps can make a big difference.

What I Ate Today: A Day of Nourishing Choices
Breakfast started with a Jimmy Dean bacon breakfast bowl, a hearty mix that provided protein and flavor to kick off the day. For lunch, I kept it simple with two hard-boiled eggs and a pepperoni stick, a low-carb, high-protein combo that kept me energized. Dinner was a highlight: homemade chicken pozole with onions, cilantro, cabbage, and a few tortilla chips. This meal was comforting and filling, thanks to my sister’s cooking. I also snacked on two more hard-boiled eggs to keep hunger at bay.
The food choices today reflect a balance of convenience and nutrition, supporting energy levels without overwhelming the system. The pozole, rich in broth and lean chicken, offered warmth and nutrients, while the eggs and pepperoni stick provided steady protein throughout the day.
Understanding Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a condition where the heart muscle thickens abnormally, making it harder for the heart to pump blood effectively. In my case, the thickening is limited to the left ventricle, the heart’s main pumping chamber. This differs from more severe cases like my daughter Mercedes’s, who had full-thickness involvement and passed away due to pneumonia and HCM complications.
HCM can be caused by genetic factors or by conditions such as uncontrolled high blood pressure. For me, high blood pressure likely contributed to the thickening. The heart muscle becomes stiff, which can lead to symptoms such as chest pain and shortness of breath.
Managing HCM involves controlling blood pressure, monitoring heart function, and sometimes medication. I recently started a new medication that is showing positive results. Regular check-ups, like my upcoming cardiologist visit, are essential for tracking progress and adjusting treatment.

Balancing Health with Life’s Moments
Today also included some personal highlights. I spent time crocheting my blanket, which is coming along nicely. Later, I attended the Boys and Girls basketball games at Queets Clearwater School. Although we lost both games, the girls’ team was competitive in the first half, showing promise and determination.
These moments remind us that health is not just about managing conditions but also about enjoying life’s simple pleasures and staying connected with family and community.
Moving Forward with Awareness and Care
Managing hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and high blood pressure requires attention to both medical advice and lifestyle choices. Keeping a food journal helps track what supports well-being and what might cause discomfort. Today’s meals, from the bacon breakfast bowl to the homemade chicken pozole, show how nourishing food can fit into a busy day.
If you or a loved one faces HCM, understanding the condition and working closely with healthcare providers is key. Small steps, like taking medication regularly and choosing balanced meals, build a foundation for better heart health.

Remember, health is a journey made up of daily choices. Celebrate the wins, learn from the challenges, and keep moving forward with hope and care.
