Starting a new health journey while carrying the weight of grief is never easy. For parents who have lost children in their teens, like my daughter who was 14, every day can feel like a battle between holding on and letting go. On day 2 of my tirzepatide journey, I found unexpected comfort in something simple yet powerful: food journaling. This post shares my experience with the meals I ate, the emotions I faced, and how documenting my food became a small act of healing amid anxiety and depression.

The Weight of Grief and Its Impact on Health

Losing a child is a pain that reshapes your entire world. For many parents, grief brings waves of anxiety and depression that affect daily routines, including eating habits. It’s common to lose appetite or turn to comfort foods that don’t nourish the body. On my tirzepatide journey, I’m learning how grief and weight loss intersect in complicated ways.

Tirzepatide, a medication designed to support weight loss and improve metabolic health, offers hope for physical change. But emotional healing requires more than medicine. It needs patience, self-compassion, and sometimes, a simple tool like a food journal to regain control and find moments of peace.

What I Ate on Day 2: Nourishing the Body and Mind

Documenting my meals helped me stay mindful about what I was putting into my body. Here’s what I ate on December 6, 2025:

  • Breakfast at Starbucks: A protein bowl with a sliced apple, peanut butter spread on a small grain roll, grapes, two hard boiled eggs, and a slice of hard cheese. This meal balanced protein, healthy fats, and fruit, providing steady energy without overwhelming my appetite.

  • Dinner: Top ramen with scrambled eggs. While ramen isn’t typically considered a health food, adding scrambled eggs boosted the protein content and made the meal more satisfying.

Writing down these meals wasn’t just about calories or nutrients. It was about acknowledging my efforts to care for myself despite the heavy cloud of grief. Each bite became a small victory.

Managing Anxiety and Depression Through Food Awareness

Anxiety and depression often make eating feel like a chore or a source of guilt. For grieving parents, these feelings can be even more intense. Keeping a food journal helped me notice patterns in my mood and appetite. On days when anxiety spiked, I craved comfort foods or found it hard to eat at all. On better days, I could focus on balanced meals that supported my body’s needs.

Here are some ways food journaling helped me manage emotional challenges:

  • Increased mindfulness: Writing down what I ate made me more aware of my choices and how they affected my mood.

  • Routine building: Having a record encouraged me to plan meals, which brought structure to chaotic days.

  • Self-compassion: Seeing my progress on paper reminded me to be gentle with myself, even when grief felt overwhelming.

For parents walking this difficult path, food journaling can be a tool to reconnect with your body and find small moments of control.

Tips for Parents Grieving While Starting a Health Journey

If you are a parent who has lost a child and are considering a weight loss or health journey, here are some practical tips based on my experience:

  • Start small: Focus on simple meals that feel manageable. Don’t pressure yourself to eat perfectly.

  • Use food journaling: Track meals and feelings to spot patterns and celebrate small wins.

  • Seek support: Talk to healthcare providers about both physical and emotional health. Grief counseling can be an important part of healing.

  • Allow flexibility: Some days will be harder than others. It’s okay to adjust your plan as needed.

  • Focus on nourishment: Choose foods that provide energy and comfort without guilt.

Remember, healing is not linear. Combining medication like tirzepatide with emotional care creates a more balanced approach.

Moving Forward with Hope and Healing

Day 2 of my tirzepatide journey was more than just about food. It was about finding hope in the small acts of caring for myself while carrying the memory of my daughter. Food journaling gave me a way to face anxiety and depression with honesty and kindness.

If you are a parent grieving a young loss, know that your feelings are valid and your journey is unique. Taking steps toward health, even small ones, can bring light to dark days. Keep a journal, reach out for support, and allow yourself grace.

Your path to healing may be long, but each meal, each moment of reflection, is a step forward.
