Christmas is a time for gathering, sharing meals, and creating memories that last a lifetime. This year’s celebration was filled with laughter, delicious food, and moments that reminded everyone of the true spirit of the season. From early morning preparations to quiet reflections by the fire, the day unfolded with warmth and joy, even when some things didn’t go exactly as planned.

Early Morning Joy and Family Cooking Traditions
The day started on a bright note, with a calm, happy mood. The pulled pork, prepared the night before by Mom and me, was ready to be enjoyed first thing in the morning. This made the start of the day smooth and stress-free. One of the biggest tasks was making 24 pounds of mashed potatoes, a dish I love and look forward to every year. The kitchen buzzed with activity as family members moved around, preparing for the many guests expected throughout the day.
Despite the busy atmosphere, there was a sense of calm and togetherness. Aunt Sheila's absence was felt deeply, since she usually makes the best gravy. I had promised to make it, but Aunt Candy took on the task instead. Unfortunately, her gravy turned out thin and floury, which was a disappointment. Three cousins tried to fix it, but nothing worked. Even so, the mashed potatoes were still a hit without the gravy.
The Christmas Feast and Food Journal Highlights
The feast was a mix of traditional and family favorites. I filled my plate with fruit salad, mashed potatoes without gravy, and some seven-layer salad. Surprisingly, I only ate the fruit salad and wrapped the rest for later. For snacks, I enjoyed cheese, summer sausage, and Ritz crackers—three of those made a perfect light bite. Later, I had a piece of pumpkin pie topped with Cool Whip for dessert, and between dinner and dessert, I ate an apple to keep my energy up.
The day saw at least 50 people coming and going, arriving in shifts, which made seating easier and allowed for more intimate conversations. The variety of food and the flow of guests created a lively but comfortable dinner for Christmas.
Special Moments and Family Connections
One of the most touching moments came when my cousin Aaron read the Christmas story from the Bible. He sat in my late grandfather’s chair, and the room grew quiet as everyone listened. The peacefulness of that moment was a beautiful contrast to the busy day. It reminded everyone of the deeper meaning behind the celebration.
My mom left my grandma’s house early to relax and enjoy time with our new baby puppy. I stayed overnight with Grandma and planned to leave early the next morning to visit cousins in Yakima for the weekend. These family visits are precious, and the Christmas gathering was a perfect start to the holiday season.
Wrapping Up the Day with Gratitude
The day was filled with food, family, and fond memories. Even with a few hiccups like the gravy mishap, the spirit of Christmas shone brightly. The shared meals, the laughter, and the quiet moments of reflection made this celebration unforgettable. The true joy of the holiday comes from being together and appreciating the simple pleasures.
